Some Interesting North London Facts Regarding The Areas The White Van Man Services
King's Cross
Until the early 1990's the area of King's Cross was regarded as something of a red-light district and was really rundown. This is not true any longer, fortunately for the residents of King's Cross, since the renovations that started in the mid 1990's.
Manor House
There was a tablet on the Manor House Pub which claims that Queen Victoria visited the pub in 1843. There is no other evidence of this though and the original pub has since been rebuilt. This pub also employed the owner of the Daily Express and Daily Star, Richard Desmond for his first job. Humble beginnings indeed!
Harringay
Harringay was covered by forest until the Middle Ages when it was turned into agricultural land. Since then it has become a lot more built-up due to the expanding population of London. Now Harringay's Arena Shopping Park is home to one of the first drive-thru McDonald's in Britain.
Stroud Green
Stroud Green used to be called Strode (1407). This word is derived from the Old English word 'stōd' which meant 'marshy ground covered with brushwood'. It was first officially recorded as being called Stowde Grene (now Stroud Green) in 1546. The Grene is Middle English and means 'village green', as the current English 'green' can mean in the correct context.
